As a Stiftungsuniversität (a university privately funded by a foundation) and citizens’ university, it is closely associated with the city and the region of Frankfurt. A Strong Academic Start
New stimulus for university teaching: In a Germany-wide competition to improve teaching, the Ministry of Education and Research has selected 111 universities for funding. Among the winners was Goethe-University, whose policy of “a strong academic start” was convincing, and the University can therefore expect to receive up to 21 million euros over the next five years

The students and staff of the Goethe University in Frankfurt can now enjoy art without having to go to a museum. Until October 3rd, 2011, 25 striking sculptures are displayed on the lawn of the Westend Campus.

The world’s smallest wedding rings
Creating artificial structures from DNA is the objective of DNA nanotechnology. Smileys or small boxes, measuring only 10s of nanometers (10 one-billionths of a meter) were created from DNA in a drop of water. Prof Alexander Heckel and his doctoral student Thorsten Schmidt from the “Cluster of Excellence for Macromolecular Complexes” at Goethe University Frankfurt were able to create two rings of DNA only 18 nanometers in size, and to interlock them like two links in a chain.

Toxic dwarves in the environment?
There are high expectations for the future of nanotechnology. It produces materials with new properties, saves energy and conserves resources. On the other hand, there are concerns about health risks to people, and the risks related to increased distribution of new nanoparticle products in the environment. Long-term effects are still unclear.

New findings for cancer therapy with slow electrons
Radiation damage to living organisms often arises after irradiation, when via complex physical processes slow electrons are released in the tissue. These electrons can accumulate in the DNA and damage it. In tumor therapy with ion beams which are used to target and destroy cancer cells, this mechanism is advantageous, since slow electrons are also created in the tissue as a secondary effect. They attack the DNA of the tumor cells.

Abuse victims free themselves from a feeling of being dirty
Katja L. (not her real name) scrapes and scrapes her arm with her fingernails: “I feel filthy, defiled, as if a thick crust of dirt covered my body.” To be freed from this feeling, the 33-year old sometimes showers more than once a day with hot water and scrubs her skin with a brush until it glows red.
